With the start of the outdoor activity & pool season, and a little less travel, our health seemed to improve. We always felt better after a hard workout or sun bathing at the pool (pretty much, after a good sweating). My overnight congestion and Dani’s nightly cough continued but we didn’t experience any sinus infections or other major health issues throughout the spring and summer months. Our only doctor’s visit was to get our weekly allergy shots!
During this time we noticed another very interesting pattern. Despite no changes to our diet we collectively experienced painful and frequency, color and consistency changes to our digestive systems.
I couldn’t figure out the trigger until one morning I ran late for an early morning meeting and had to skip my daily skim milk decaffeinated latte and breakfast sandwich and didn’t experience any problems all day. But they were back the following day after the regular breakfast routine. I apparently had developed some sort of food intolerance. Strange! We started to do some research without any game changing results. It could be anything – lactose, gluten, grain, preservatives, egg – the list was endless. Based on my observations, my hypothesis was a lactose intolerance, so I changed my breakfast latte from cow milk to almond milk as a first step and see how it would work out. So far so good!
Dani’s situation was a bit different as a remove of lactose did not seem to make a difference in her symptoms. However, she had a family history of gastrointestinal disorders and diseases, from diverticulitis and IBS all the way up to Crohn’s. Luckily her symptoms were not as severe or frequent as mine or her relatives, so she took it as more of an inconvenience that flared up at times.
