To Epipen® Or Not To Epipen®?

In late fall of 2016 we were basically back to square one. Actually, it was way worse than square one. We both had chronic cold like symptoms. The post nasal drip and above normal mucus production became a constant nuisance for me and Dani’s nightly deep dry cough was back in such force that the dogs raised there head in concern with ever cough. My headaches and sinus pressure seem to get worse and we both started to experience occasional  “brain fog” and vertigo. Shortly after the New Year the next sinus infection hit me, Dani’s Epstein-Barr active infection antibodies were still elevated and her white blood cell count was slightly low. We both started to develop night sweats, soaking the bed sheets basically every night.

Then, mid-January, I woke up in the middle of the night gasping for air as my sinuses and airways were swollen shut and filled with mucus. I reached for my Epipen® and contemplated using it if my breathing didn’t improve, despite being more afraid of than anything else. I got up, widened my sinuses with a steam bath, rinsed them with a saline solution and finally used a steroid nasal spray to improve my breathing.

We had already been discussing moving for business reasons, but given this latest event, we immediately drove to Raleigh and started our search for a new construction 2 bedroom condo. Moving out of the beach condo wasn’t apparently enough. We had to remove ourselves as soon as possible from the local allergens entirely, we thought.

We looked at a handful of potential condo options that day and after about an hour walking in various areas in and around Raleigh we started to feel, relatively speaking, much better. I hadn’t sneezed once, my brain fog was gone and we both felt a lot more energized. During the house hunting process we took multiple trips to Raleigh and continued to have the same positive experience. The decision to move to Raleigh for good was an easy one to make. We made a down payment on our new home with a May 1st move-in date and rented a temporary 1 bedroom apartment in the meantime.
